Son of Mars is the professional name of rapper, songwriter and producer Stephon Peters-Smith. Born and raised in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago he eventually moved to the United States to attend the University of Rochester in upstate New York. That is where the artist began his solo recording career, releasing his first self titled EP in 2019.
Co-produced and composed by producer Ricky Johnson and Stephon Peters-Smith himself, the three song collection “Son of Mars EP” introduces a unique talent to the world of Hip-hop. With clever wordplay and wild stream-of-consciousness lyrics, he delivers some classic hardcore Hip-hop themes with a lighthearted and often comedic tone. The record opens on the cool freestyle of “Anakin.” A quirky Jazz piano riff rides a beat featuring elements of both Trap and Glitch grooves as the rapper delivers his funky autobiography.
“First Born” is a slow and dark Trap groove. A dramatic orchestral string sample shares space with percussive synths while subterranean bass hits hold down the bottom. Meanwhile, in his signature laid-back flow Son of Mars drops rhymes about women, money and his foes. The record closes on “Watch Yourself,” a hard freestyle mixing X-rated themes with Shakespeare references over a Trap beat with some cool retro synths and 8-bit samples.
