Love Ghost & Rico Nasty Go Dark On ‘Wolfsbane’

Love Ghost & Rico Nasty Go Dark On 'Wolfsbane' 1

We first heard from Love Ghost in April of this year when the prolific and eclectic Los Angeles band released their single and video “Shine Like Gold.” The song was one in a long string of hits from the group. Led by singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Finnegan Bell, they have released a new genre-bending single each month. Equally inspired by modern Hip-hop, Indie Rock and classic Alternative and Grunge, Bell stirs these influences together to create something wholly unique to Love Ghost.

Fans around the globe have reacted. The band counts its streaming numbers in the millions across multiple platforms. They have toured the world and shared the stage with the biggest names in the industry. Throughout the pandemic and now into 2021 they have maintained their impressive output, with eight new singles released so far this year. Their reach expands with each new song and their latest single is poised to become their biggest yet.

“Wolfsbane” is the brand new single from Love Ghost, released worldwide to all major streaming services on July 16, 2021. This time the band has teamed up with popular DC-area rapper Rico Nasty for a psychologically complex examination of contradictory personal motivations. The track opens on a 90’s Alternative style guitar and vocal intro that brings to mind some of Nirvana’s quieter moments. Finnegan sings, “Breathe in, breathe out. Don’t become what hurt you.” That moment of Zen is short-lived but important. Used as a refrain it becomes the voice of reason to counter the darkness that runs through much of the song’s werewolf analogy of internal emotional conflict.

Soon the beat drops and the song digs deep into a dark Metal/Trap groove. Bell and Rico alternate verses, singing and rapping their nihilistic narratives of pain-fueled apathy and avarice. In the chorus the song’s tight power chord crunch opens up to a big Emo Rock punch before Finnegan returns briefly to the mellow refrain, functioning as a sort-of Greek chorus Jekyll to his own Hyde. This is smart stuff set to some excellent fist-pumping Rock.
