Mei Anima is the professional name of the multi-instrumentalist singing, songwriting and production duo of Edin Hajdarovac and Cole Martin. The Vancouver, Canada group made their debut earlier this year with the release of the single “can you hold on.” That song introduced an adventurous and creative team with an experimental streak and penchant for psychedelic vibes and downtempo beats. The two further defined their unique sound with the neo-Disco funk of the follow-up single “time and space.”
On July 16, 2021 Mei Anima dropped their debut self-titled 7-song EP. The record dives deeper into the band’s genre-bending trippiness. Their sound mixes analog and digital instrumentation with a keen melodic sense and deep understanding of groove. They also have some pretty impressive chops as musicians. They pair Blues riffs with R&B moods and filter soulful jams through an Indie Rock aesthetic.
The EP’s first single is its closing track, “the way she.” The song opens on a melodic guitar progression which soon meets a mellow Trip-hop beat. Edin and Cole trade verses with a guest female vocalist in a dark meditation on a severely broken relationship. Hypnotic vocal melodies and a mix of guitars, bass and synths paint a lush ambient scene. It’s a cool and mellow groove with some creepy undertones, like the recurring lyrical theme “I know you wish I was dead.”
