Kansas City, Missouri singer/songwriter Bill Abernathy first appeared here on The Static Dive two years ago, upon the release of his album “Crossing Willows Creek” and its single “Can’t Go Back.” That record introduced us to a veteran artist who returned to music after a years-long hiatus with a volume of stories to tell. He has kept the music coming since then, releasing a string of new singles including three new songs in 2021.
Sometimes life is good to you and gives you a second chance. In my youth I walked away from music for a myriad of personal reasons. Now, I’ve now been given a second chance to pursue this thing we love called music, and I am really enjoying the ride!

“A Thousand Wild Horses” is the latest single from Bill Abernathy, released worldwide to all major streaming services on May 29. 2021. The track is a cover of a song written by Gary Burr, one third of the Kenny Loggins-fronted Blue Sky Riders. For his take, Bill has augmented the solo acoustic sound of the original with a classic Country/Folk arrangement. Backed by a tapestry of acoustic guitars, mandolin and a slow and subtle rhythm section, Bill delivers this tale of resurrected personal ghosts in an earnest and intimate, almost whispered performance.
It’s an excellent rendition of a really beautiful song. Check out the lyric video for “A Thousand Wild Horses” below. You can also hear the song on the Deep Indie Songwriters playlist.
