Boomz is an independent Hip-hop artist from Paterson, New Jersey who first made an appearance here on The Static Dive in March of this year, upon the release of his album “B4 This There Was Boombap.” That record introduced us to a rapper with street cred and the musical diversity to create a sound that keeps one foot in the old-school, and the other in the future. Boomz (aka Boomba) mixes Boombap beats with modern Trap grooves and a lyrical writing style that recalls the golden era of both East Coast Hip-hop and West Coast Gangsta Rap.
The prolific emcee is back with another collection of genre-bending Hip-hop. This time Boomz has teamed up with fellow Paterson rapper Wise for the forthcoming EP “Art Of Sample Killing.” The two artists join North Jersey producer MTG for 5 tracks of hard Drill rap over beats that match classic Hip-hop breaks with fat 808s, modern Trap hi-hat rhythms and wildly creative sampling.
Tracks like “All 4 the Art” and “Gang Gang” match the rappers’ tales of street drama with sparse beats and ambient synths while Classical arpeggios paint the edges of the mix. Throughout the record MTG mixes elements of other genres like EDM and UK Grime into his beats to create a brand new vibe. “Devil May Cry” features a great beat with both old and new flavors. Boomz and Wise trade some clever freestyle bars as cinematic ambient synths and vocals create a cinematic mood.
“Last 24” is a dark fantasy in which Boomz, Wise and guest rapper Dre each share what they would do with their last 24 bullets as 70’s Soul music loops in the background. “Shook Ones” takes the experimentation one step further. A distant old piano plays in the background as the song moves around it. Trap beats become breakbeats and then back again as the rappers each takes his turn at some hard rap.
