Elektragaaz is a live and virtual instrumental group based in New York City, led by a mysterious Frisian composer who goes by the name of Poppo Redband. Working with a collective of musicians from NYC and around the world, the group creates wild genre-defying instrumental music. Their sound features a rich ensemble of organic and electronic instruments performing a mix of Classical, Jazz, Hip-hop and Electronic music.
Since their debut in early 2021, the group has released three EPs, each is a subsequential chapter in “The Synaesthetic Picture Show Now Playing” series. “Dancing With Evil Intent” is the opening track and brand new single from “Part 3” in the anthology, released worldwide to all major streaming services on September 7, 2021. The eclectic piece is an excellent introduction to the group’s adventurous sound.
“Dancing With Evil Intent” by Elektragaaz opens on a percussive tribal beat. Acoustic drums, synths and a mix of analog and electronic instruments ride a rolling rhythm. As the track progresses, guitars, piano, analog synths and trumpet take turns playing variations of the central melodic theme. The arrangement and composition have a cinematic and timeless sound.
The music is both American and European, ancient, modern and sexy. One imagines a scene from a saloon/brothel in a spaghetti western. However, for this particular production, Ennio Morricone hired an avant-garde Eastern European troupe to record the score. The song is accompanied by an original painting (above). The artwork of highly regarded Polish artist Ola Lubczyńska perfectly captures the seductive spirit of the piece.
