Lil Midget’s Dark Moods & Emo Trap Grooves

Lil Midget

Lil Midget is the professional name of emerging singer, songwriter and rapper Brandon Rivera. Born in Miami and raised in Central Florida’s Polk County, the aspiring musician made his professional recording debut last year with the single “Blush.” Since then, the prolific artist has amassed an impressive volume of work in a short period of time, releasing three singles and three EPs in just a year.

“Finally Over” is the brand new EP from Lil Midget, released worldwide to all major streaming services on October 10, 2021. The 6 song record finds the singer taking a hard look at his own life. In his signature Emo Trap vibe he examines his own mental state and the relationships in his life that have fallen short of expectations. From the general sense of ennui expressed in the opening track “Falling Apart” to the dark suicide and murder fantasies of “Finally Over” and “Finding Peace,” the record covers some difficult territory.

Brandon lists artists like xxxtentacion, drokenji, and thehxliday as inspiration. We can hear their influence in both his style and sound. Musically “Finally Over” pairs mellow, minor-key guitar and piano samples with downtempo 808 Trap grooves. Electric and acoustic guitars ride Trap beats as ambient synths and percussive arpeggios fade in and out of the mix. Lil Midget sings and rhymes about dishonest lovers, failed friendships and the anxiety and depression that comes with the territory. As a vocalist he slides smoothly between Dark Pop vocals and melodic rap bars. Guest singer Luxy KH also adds some nice soulful R&B vocals to the song “Feed Me Your Lies.”
