We first heard from Micki XO in August upon the release of her single “War.” That track introduced readers of The Static Dive to Michelle Gilman, a Portland, Oregon based singer/songwriter with a deeply personal, confessional songwriting style and a genre-bending sound. Michelle made her solo debut in 2020 and has released four singles to date.
“Moonlight” is the latest track from Micki XO, released worldwide to all major streaming services on September 30, 2021. The song is a subdued love letter to the singer’s own mind. On previous tracks Michelle chronicled her battle with bipolar disorder and body image issues. She was at war with her own mind and the memories that haunted it. On “Moonlight” she has found peace.
Musically, the song matches Micki XO’s newfound serenity with a laid-back Dream Pop sound. A downtempo shuffling Hip-hop beat meets lush ambient synths and low, cool bass tones. As that latenight moonlit groove rolls on, the singer delivers a soft and soulful dedication to a hard fought happiness found after years of searching. Addressing her own mind and body she sings, “I’ve been broken down and betrayed. But all the hurting was worth it to meet you.”
