Greg Hoy is a veteran of both the East and West Coast Indie Rock scenes. After spending his early years in Pennsylvania, playing in bands and learning the ropes of recording a record production, the multitalented writer, recording engineer and multi-instrumentalist songwriter eventually made his way to the Big Apple. There he wrote for the iconic Village Voice and rubbed shoulders with everyone from David Byrne to Norah Jones.
In 2011 Greg Hoy moved to the West Coast to take a job with Facebook. There he continued his Rock & Roll journey with his bands The Royal Panics and his current ensemble Greg Hoy & The Boys. Over the years the prolific musician has released over 30 albums, composed music for film and television and worked with industry legends like Steve Albini (Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ producer).
On October 15, 2021, Greg Hoy & The Boys released a ‘2 Song Sampler’ featuring “Highway 101” and “Spouses of the Lowly,” the first and last tracks from the group’s new ‘Cacophony 2’ EP, released worldwide to all major streaming services on June 25. The EP is the second half of a double album recorded live in studio over a two week period during the pandemic. On the record, Greg and his band knock out their singular brand of guitar-driven Alternative Rock.
“Highway 101” paints a portrait of a California coastline road trip. The guitars jangle and the backbeat keeps the ride at a mellow cruising pace as Greg delivers a classic road song. The sound is equal parts 80’s Alternative and 70’s Classic Rock, as though Elvis Costello and Jackson Browne got together to write a tune about the PCH.
“Spouses of the Lowly ” looks back a bit further in Rock & Roll history. The track opens with some early-60’s noir Surf Rock vibes before kicking into an upbeat rocker that brings to mind California Punk/Americana giants X. The two tracks together present a consummate band backing a skilled songwriter at the top of his game.
