Shannon Roszell – Day Of The Dead

shannon roszell

Hailing from the Kawartha Lakes, northeast of Toronto, Shannon Roszell is a Canadian singer/songwriter who made her international professional solo recording debut in March of this year with the release of the single “Gonna Love You.” That track introduced a uniquely talented artist who specializes in emotionally moving narratives set to powerful symphonic Indie Rock.

Since her debut, Shannon Roszell has made an impression worldwide. Three more singles followed, and with each new release she further expands the depth of her cinematic orchestral sound and poetic, lyrical verse. Tracks like “My Escape” and “Science Experiment” have garnered praise from fans and critics alike. Her distinctive style pairs a voice reminiscent of legendary singers like Natalie Merchant and Dolores O’Riordan with a moving and epic Art-Rock sound.

“Day of the Dead” is the latest single from Shannon Roszell, released worldwide to all major streaming services on October 29, 2021. Ambient synths and a dissonant guitar introduce the track as Shannon repeats the ominous lyric, “In 90 years when I’m long dead, will you sing this song to me?” A percussive assault of timpani drums enters the mix. Those drums and Shannon’s soulful vocal define the track as synths and symphonic strings paint the periphery.

Written as a tribute to the late great Lou Reed, the song is a Dark Pop meditation on mortality. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, Reed is a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee for both his solo work and for the music of legendary band The Velvet Underground. He died of liver failure in 2013. “Day of the Dead” looks at the impermanence of life and the legacy we leave behind.

With the passing of each musical influence, I find myself encountering my own mortality. What legacy will I leave behind? How much time do I have to make music?
