Knoffer’s Hypnotic Funnel Cake

knoffer

Knoffer is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer who made his solo professional recording debut in April of this year with the single “Daydreamer.” That track introduced a genre-bending songwriter and performer with a distinctly unique talent.¬†Although this project is new, Knoffer the musician is not. His new material follows years of recording and performing with other artists. “Funnel Cake” is his latest single, released worldwide to all major streaming services on November 26, 2021.¬†

With its individual components viewed separately, “Funnel Cake” is a simple song. However, taken as a whole, the track lives in a completely unique space all its own. A downtempo dance beat sets a mellow but funky mood. Ambient synths and a low moaning bass stretch across the horizon while two percussive electric piano chords echo in the air between them.

As that hypnotic groove rolls on, Knoffer delivers a soulful poetic monologue about healing and growing from some unnamed trauma. Again, viewed on their own the lyrics are minimalist and cryptic. However, in context the message is perfectly clear. The details don’t matter. We feel exactly what we are supposed to feel when he sings, “Every time I feel that breeze, I remember what I’ve seen.” We are there with him. We remember.

The “Funnel Cake” video features the singer dancing alone in a smoky disco. The artist, the smoke and the lights are the clip’s only props, and we can’t take our eyes off of it. The visual perfectly captures both the song’s esoteric charm and its intimate familiarity.
