The Unwell is a new Alternative Pop/Rock group consisting of the mononymous songwriting duo of Dave & Sam. The two friends formed the group earlier this year around the idea of creating a concept album based on the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance). The intent was not to express the grief of any specific loss but instead the commonality of grief as a human experience.
“New Worlds and Ancient Mysteries’ ‘ is the debut album from The Unwell. The 8-song collection pairs the group’s psychological and sociological premise with a mix of modern Indie, Alternative and Classic Rock. Citing influences as varied as Radiohead, Dire Straits and Deep Purple, the band wields Rock riffs, Pop hooks and plenty of trippy psychedelia. From the New Wave groove of songs like “So Long” to the funky Pop/Jazz of “Souls from the Inner Worlds’ ‘ and the multi-genre experimentation of “Caged,” the band creates a unique and cerebral experience.
“Regret” is the current single from “New Worlds and Ancient Mysteries,” released worldwide to all major streaming services on November 30, 2021. The track opens on a chorus-soaked guitar that brings to mind early Alternative pioneers like Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure. From there the track builds into a Dream Pop vibe with melancholy and wistful lyrics, ethereal multi-part harmonies and a breezy Southern California sound that belies the song’s somber lyrics. It’s a great vibe.
