Lhost is an emerging independent artist who made his professional solo recording debut in 2020 with the single “In Mind.” That track introduced a talented young R&B singer from Ohio with a taste for smooth Jazz-hop jams and downtempo Hip-hop beats. Since then, the prolific musician has produced a steady string of releases.
“Broken Mic” is the debut EP from Lhost, released worldwide to all major streaming services on May 21, 2021. On the 5-song collection the sings tells real-life tales of life in his Cleveland neighborhood. He wraps his stories in melancholy Jazz moods, downbeat R&B and slow Trap grooves. The record opens on electric piano and deep bass tones of “East Flow Intro.” Lhost delivers the heartbreaking soliloquy of a man at the end of his rope, calling out for help. “Ties” follows with some mesmerizing Soul vibes. An experimental mix of backing vocals and guitar accompany the singer for chill Hip-hop slow jam.
The excellent “Kilo” is a slow rolling mix of 90’s gangster rap and boy band R&B Soul. Immersed in the song’s psychedelic vibes, Lhost sings and raps about the impact of drugs and violence on his community. The title track “Broken Mic” follows with a soulful meditation on institutional racism and the systems in place to stifle the dissenting voices of African Americans. The EP closes on “Closer,” a bluesy Jazz guitar mood. Over a Lo-fi, minimalist beat Lhost drops an emotional, stream-of-consciousness narrative.
