James Gale is an emerging singer/songwriter with an organic and emotionally raw sound. His music finds inspiration in classic Alternative Rock, Pop and Blues. The Bruges, Belgium based musician sings deeply personal songs about his own battles with chronic depression and anxiety. In 2021 he made his professional solo recording debut.
“Medicine” is the debut EP from James Gale, released worldwide to all major streaming services on December 3, 2021. The four song collection introduces a talented songwriter with a taste for electric Indie Folk/Rock and an honest and intimate lyrical style. The record opens on the title track. Gale sets the scene with a guitar, bass and vocal examination of his mental state and the chemicals responsible for its maintenance. His unfiltered lyricism and the song’s barebones guitar, bass and vocal arrangement give the track a Lou Reed meets Americana vibe.
“Summer Blues” follows, featuring an unadorned guitar and bass riding a minimalist drum machine groove. With its clever stream of consciousness lyrics and Lo-fi mix of Blues and 90’s Grunge, the track has the feel of some long lost Kurt Cobain demo. “Drifting” floats in with a dark and haunting minor-key piano. James Gales sings a melancholy escape fantasy as ambient synths and vocal samples paint the periphery. A rhythmic guitar and drum beat alternately advances and retreats for great dramatic effect.
The record closes with a ray of hope. Musically speaking, “Your House” takes us back to where we began with a no-frills, downtempo guitar, bass and drums Indie Rock arrangement. However, lyrically James Gale has found some peace. The singer arrives at the home of his lover and finds solace in their arms. He has found his true medicine.
