“Dark Matriarch” is the new EP from Da Trap Witch Khali Ma, released worldwide to all major streaming services on February 11, 2022. The two track collection solidifies the rapper’s position as a spellcasting emcee. Even her name is provocative, being borrowed from a Hindu goddess referred to by some as the ‘Mother Goddess.’
“Cast My Spell” opens the set. After a fire and brimstone introduction the beat drops on a low Trap groove. Hypnotic vocal samples float on the periphery as Da Trap Witch Khali Ma enters the mix. The rapper delivers dark magick imagery, religious symbolism and classic Hip-Hop posturing with a rapid-fire flow and the syncopation and timing of a Jazz musician.
“No Cap (Libations)” follows with a touch of old school mixed with new. The song opens with a low retro sawtooth bass and piano intro. Soon an 808 drops a classic Trap beat as piano arpeggios paint the edges of the mix. Da Trap Witch Khali Ma steps to the mic and lets loose some even more impressive technique as she serves up her mix of spirituality, philosophy and Hip-hop drama. It’s a great jam and a lot of fun.
