PsychCloned is back with more genre-bending musical exploration. Regular readers of The Static Dive know the artist as North Carolinian composer Gabriel Pureco. Over the past three years the prolific producer has released a voluminous catalog of wildly creative instrumental music.
Originally inspired by his love of gaming, his early releases consisted mostly of classically influenced cinematic pieces. They were primarily solo electronic productions. However, in recent months Pureco has focused more on single and EP releases. He has expanded his stylistic range by delving into genres like Prog Rock and experimental Jazz. Gabriel has also worked with a wide array of collaborators on his new music.
“Full Throttle” is the latest single from PsychCloned, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 4, 2022. On the new track Pureco continues his musical exploration with his first foray into Math Rock. The genre is a twist on Progressive Rock, with added layers of musical complexity. The recording features frequent collaborator Ryan Jones on guitar and Keys, Camilo D.G. on bass and Space Hobo on drums.
Acoustic and electric guitars open the track with a bluesy Western vibe. However, soon the rest of the ensemble enters the mix and they kick into a Frank Zappa-style series of nuanced melodic stanzas. The group maneuvers its way through time signature changes and syncopated riffs with the adventurous spirit of improvisational Jazz and the Art-Rock complexity of bands like Rush and Yes.
I personally really enjoy listening to Math Rock as to me the genre feels very alive and energetic. With the varied time signatures and general upbeatness of the song, “Full Throttle” is very engaging and has a perfect storytelling feel.
