Hope40mill is the professional name of rapper, singer and songwriter David Maqashela. He made his international debut in 2020 with the single ‘Makaveli.’ That song introduced a skilled emcee from Ventersdorp, South Africa with a melodic style, a lyrical flow and a taste for experimental beats. However, he is no newcomer. The singer has enjoyed a successful career in his home country for more than a decade.
In 2009 he won the prestigious South African talent competition TV show “Jam Alley.” After joining the SAAF (South African Air Force) he moved around the country, immersing himself in the Hip-hop scenes of cities like Cape Town and Pretoria. Throughout his travels he has continued to make television and radio appearances on numerous popular South African programs.
“Holy Water” is the latest single from Hope40mill, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 7, 2022. The track opens on a minor-key organ and synth chord progression as the singer soulfully chants the song’s title. Soon the beat drops on a hard Trap groove. The track combines elements of Hip-hop, Glitch and Afro Pop for cool and dark Funk.
A deep sawtooth synth bass holds down the bottom as Hope40mill drops a smooth and melodic freestyle. The singer offers his confessional with references to everyone from Muhammed Ali to the Bible and David Blaine. It’s a great downtempo Hip-hop groove with strong R&B vibes and a healthy dose of social commentary.
