DEO is the professional name of singer/songwriter Daniel Okonne. Born in Nigeria, as a child Daniel immigrated to the United States with his family. Music and education were both very important in the Okonne household. The family was very involved in their local church and they all sang together in the choir.
After High School, Daniel attended college at Hunter University in Upstate, New York. Throughout school he remained active in music but never thought to take it further than a hobby. In recent years he has developed a newfound ambition to pursue his art more seriously. He found his creative spark while in the unlikely confines of 2020’s COVID lockdowns.
“My Letter To You (World Cup)” is the brand new single from DEO, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 25, 2022. Born out of the pandemic, the song is an open letter from the singer to the world’s most popular sporting event. Just like everything else, the World Cup went on hiatus during the pandemic.
The track opens with the roar of the crowd and an announcer welcoming us to the World Cup. Soon DEO steps to the mic. He sings of the loneliness and despair he felt during lockdown, addressing the World Cup like an old friend. Throughout the narrative, the soccer contest serves as a symbol of the world we left behind. However, despite the somber premise, the song is an inspirational Afrobeat Pop anthem. DEO and guest vocalist Mary raise our spirits and help us look forward to brighter days.
