DonDon is an emerging independent Hip-hop artist who made his professional solo debut four years ago with the single “Myself.” That track introduced a talented singer, songwriter, rapper and producer from Detroit with an introspective, confessional and autobiographical lyrical style. Since then the prolific artist has amassed an impressive volume of work, including a total of ten singles and a full length album.
Even before he started dropping records, DonDon was making music. He first got his start at just 9 years-old when he picked up the trumpet for the first time. As he got older he began writing his own music . With the help of his brother Ku-laid and their friend Hemp, the young rapper hit the studio in 2018 and never looked back.
“Survival Mode” is the brand new single and video from DonDon, released worldwide to all major streaming services on April 15, 2022. A melancholy minor-key piano opens the track as ethereal vocal samples dance on the edge of the mix. Soon the beat drops on a chilled downtempo Trap groove and the singer steps to the mic and delivers a melodic freestyle. He sings and raps about his experiences, navigating the problems of our crazy modern world.
In the song’s video we see DonDon surrounded by visual representations of the cacophony of information which bombards us each day. Bad news and politics haunt the rapper as he tries to make his way through his day. The scene is set in Tyree Guyton’s famous Pop Art installation The Heidelberg Project, created in 1986 amid the urban decay of a Detroit neighborhood. It is a powerful visual.
