The Drood are a post-industrial electronic group who made their professional recording debut in 2016 with a 9-song self-titled debut album. That record introduced the wildly creative Denver, Colorado duo of Nathan Jamiel (Vocals, Electric Guitar, Keyboards) and Daniel Watts (Drums, Keys). The two musicians create genre-defying downtempo music that explores the edges of psychedelia and electronic experimentation.
Since that first record , The Drood have produced a string of singles as well as the follow-up 2020 album Totally Comfortable. Finding success both in the real world and online, the duo has headlined at Denver’s coveted Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox. In 2019 they opened for the international touring band The Legendary Pink Dots at a sold-out special Halloween show. Like everyone else, The Drood had to put their plans on hold temporarily during the pandemic. However, they returned earlier this year with the single “It Must Needs Wither.”
“Psychic Institute” is the brand new single from The Drood, released worldwide to all major streaming services on April 22, 2022. The tune is a hypnotic mix of classic Dark Wave, Trip-hop and modern experimental Indie. Ambient synths open the track before the beat drops on a driving, retro drum machine groove. An electronic bass pulses at the heart of the tune while electronic arpeggios and glitch tech tones paint the edges of the mix. Jamiel’s Gary Numan/Ian Curtis inspired vocal trades verses with a cool bit of Acid Rock guitar.
While the beats bring the energy, the lyrics and vocals tap into a sense of mystic ennui for the way the world clings to empty sentimentality.
