Vandal of Hearts is the professional name of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer James St. Thomas. The UK musician debuted his new project with the 7-song collection ‘Bad Dream’ on May 21, 2022, released worldwide to all major streaming services. With that record he introduced a nuanced and genre-bending guitar-driven sound combining elements of Classic, Alternative and Art Rock with the experimental freedom of Post-Punk and Post-Rock.
Though Vandal of Hearts’ music has its foundation in Rock & Roll, the sound is shaped by forces far outside of that bubble. Philosophically motivated by the ideals and principles of 60’s, musically James’ compositions are colored by Jazz chordal structures, Classical melodic patterns and World music rhythms. A highly skilled guitarist, as a player he allows himself the experimental freedom to explore the space between the notes.
“Blissy” is the first single from ‘Bad Dream’. Two hard panned electric guitars ride a funky Alt-Rock drum and bass rhythm. Melodic syncopated riffs and chords play point and counterpoint in a mix that combines the laid-back cool of modern Indie Rock and the music sophistication and adventurous spirit of avant-garde Jazz. James steps to the mic with a dreamy ode to music itself. He sings of both the potential and limitations of the artform.
… whilst music can help us feel better and provoke thought (a gift in itself), it cannot cure personal ills.
