dj Moderno is the musical alter-ego of acclaimed Spanish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer Germán Ormaechea. For years the multi-talented artist has performed various roles in popular groups like Igeldo. Regular readers of The Static Dive will remember German from his work with AmyJo Doh & The Spangles. In 2020 the prolific producer began releasing monthly singles in anticipation of his debut solo LP. Now, at long last the record is here.
La nave nodriza is the new album from dj Moderno, released worldwide via all major streaming services on April 6, 2022. Consisting of 9 previously released singles and two brand new tracks for 2022, the album is a celebration of classic EDM, Pop and New Wave grooves from across the decades, highlighting the bass-heavy vibes of House, Tropical, Funk, Electro Rock, Nu-disco, Electroclash, Alternative Dance and Electropop.
From the Techno funk and Disco feels of the opening title track (and current single) to the New Wave hook of the closer “Sigo aquí sentado,” La nave nodriza revels in the analog synths and drum machine beats of the great 1980’s. However, dj Moderno frequently steps out of the Delorean lane and incorporates multiple eras and genres into his music.
Playing all of the instruments on the album himself, Moderno spins a wild mix of genres. He takes us on a ride through the early days of House music on tracks like “La moderna” and the English-language song “Stand Up!” (feat Yvonne Power). Tracks like “Perseverance” (featuring AmyJo Doherty) and “Punk Estupido” bring to mind the driving club grooves of classic New Wave and Dark Wave bands like Jesus and Mary Chain and Souxsie and the Banshees. “Renton” is a real highpoint as it builds from a Lo-fi beat and slap-bass Funk to an epic Synthwave banger.
