Askoskar is an alternative electronic composer and producer who made his professional solo recording debut earlier this year with the instrumental “Etak.” That record introduced a wildly creative artist with a sound that lives somewhere between 90’s Trip-hop, 60’s psychedelia and modern EDM. Since then, the prolific producer has released three follow-up singles, each continuing the instrumental sci-fi theme.
Although this is his solo debut as an electronic producer, Askoskar is no newbie. For more than a decade he performed various roles in alternative rock bands in and around his hometown of Berlin, Germany. Eventually growing tired of “shitty concerts in shitty clubs,” he has gone fully electronic.
“Black Splashes” is the latest single from Askoskar, released worldwide to all major streaming services on May 13, 2022. Like its three predecessors, the song is named for chapters from a book by Russian science fiction authors, the brothers Strugatsky. The 7:24 piece is a trippy electronic space ride.
From the opening boombap beat to the wobbly analog sawtooth bass, Askoskar takes listeners on a retro-future journey that pairs Dr. Who vibes with Dark Pop drama. It is a fun listen and one in which it’s easy to get wonderfully lost.
