F***ing Gary is the professional name of singer, songwriter, rapper and producer, Garrett Bentley. A resident of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, making his professional recording debut in 2022. Bentley started writing songs about four years ago, inspired by his own healing journey.
My biggest musical influences are Kendrick Lamar and Slipknot. My greatest non-musical influence is mental health.
F***ing Gary
Producing all of his music himself, he writes deeply personal and honest music. With just a beat and a microphone he taps into some deep-seated emotions. He holds nothing back on his debut single, a biting and visceral soliloquy.
“Okay” opens on percussive synth arpeggios that remain as the primary melodic theme throughout the song. The singer steps to the mic and comes out swinging. A rhythmic, Caribbean-infused hip-hop beat backs him up as the rapper delivers a rapid-fire stream of consciousness freestyle rap. He rhymes at chopping speed with sometimes explosive energy. Ultimately the track is a plea for connection as Gary sings in the refrain, “I don’t know how to communicate.”
