Chris Lewington is a veteran singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who made his solo professional recording debut in 2018 with the album Landells Road. That record marked a new phase in a musical career that began nearly 40 years earlier when the young UK musician started his first band, The Silence. The group received some notoriety in the early 80’s psychedelic new wave scene with tracks like “A Car in Denmark” and “The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter.”
In the decades since, Chris Lewington enjoyed success with award winning bands The Bicycle Thieves and later with The Famous Blue Raincoats. Through most of the early 2000s Chris worked as a songwriter for publishers before releasing his own material. He followed Landells Road with the deeply personal 2021 album, Riverside.
On August 28, Chris Lewington will drop his third solo album, Starfish Memories. As is the case on all of his solo releases, Chris writes, records, performs and produces all of his material himself. Early this month the singer released a 4 song sampler of tracks from the forthcoming album.
The EP opens with “The Bridge at Midnight,” an esoteric tale packed with visual metaphors and social commentary. With an organic mix of guitars, organ, bass and drums his sound recalls the classic psychedelic alternative songwriters with whom he used to rub shoulders. On tracks like “Blue Skies, Fields of Gold” and “Radio Radio,” Chris pairs the dreamy, quirky Robyn Hitchcock-esque poetry with a rich musical mix. Like the great Julian Cope, Chris pairs the sounds and philosophy of the 60’s with modern alternative rock arrangements.
