Horny Cricket Calls Out the 1% with ‘Whitey On The Moon’

Horny Cricket is the professional name of underground composer and producer Robert K. Beshara. A native of Cairo, Egypt, he worked as a producer and performer in his hometown’s thriving underground scene for years. Now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the genre-bending musician debuted his latest project in July with a brand new album on Bandcamp. “Whitey on the Moon” is the first single from Horny Cricket, released worldwide via all major streaming services on July 1, 2022.

Inspired by a piece of the same name by the legendary musician/poet/philosopher Gil Scott-Heron, the song calls out the great discrepancies in health and wealth between the haves and have-nots. Like the original, the song grabs our attention with its incendiary title. However, also in the same vein as the GSH classic, the track is more a commentary on the socio-economic discrepancies in America that persist fifty years since the GSH told his tale of struggling to pay the bills.

This project is a commentary on, and a critique of, the COVID era, wherein many (particularly the working class) suffered both materially and psychologically.

The track rolls on a multi-genre downtempo groove. Ambient keys ride a lo-fi trap beat as analog synths and percussive arpeggios paint the edges of the mix to create a psychedelic trip-hop vibe. Rapper Sigma Strange steps to the mic and delivers his take on the modern day disparity between the 1% and the rest of us.
