Walter Sickert and his Army Of Broken Toys have been entertaining the good people of Boston with their unique brand of avant-garde rock & roll since they dropped their debut album Casualty Menagerie in 2008. That record introduced an eccentric singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a taste for noir themes and dramatic/cinematic productions. Since that debut the prolific producer and his motley crew have released eight albums and a string of singles.
The Army of Broken Toys is an ensemble of likeminded free-thinking musicians that bring to life Walter Sickert’s unique theatrical vision. Like a New England Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, the band weaves together the traditional and the absurd into a sound that intentionally walks the line between the sublime and grotesque. It is a captivating sound that mixes elements of rock, Americana, dark pop and goth. And that is where the band’s latest single comes in.
“Goth Beach” is the band’s new beach party bop for the rest of us, released worldwide via all major streaming services on July 4, 2022. The song itself is not actually goth, but instead it sings the praises of all things dark and eyelinery over an upbeat surf punk jam.
The track rides a simple three chord groove as Walter Sickert describes a wonderful mythical beach where we take shrooms with Siouxsie Sioux and have ice cream with the late great Vincent Price. The video is a blast and features the singer with a cast of his wonderfully gothic friends dancing on the creepiest and coolest beach this side of Rockaway.
