Working Memory is the brainchild of musical brothers Casey and Ryan Chanatry. The multi-instrumentalist duo have been making music together and separately since childhood. The creative siblings dabbled in a wide assortment of instruments including; trumpet, recorder, violin, bodhrán, and keys before landing on guitar (Casey) and drums (Ryan).
From the 1990s through the 2010s, the Chanatry brothers performed in a number of popular projects. Casey toured the US for more than a decade with his popular jam band Jahman Brahman. In that time the group played major festivals including Bonnaroo, The Werk Out, Resonance, and Wormtown and released two critically acclaimed albums. Ryan has performed in a number of bands including the Phish cover ensemble Logic and the group Sexual Mullet.
Searching is the debut EP from Working Memory, released worldwide via all major streaming services on July 29, 2022. The Chanatry brothers’ first official collaboration is a dreamy four-track set of psychedelic indie-pop. Casey and Ryan bring their rich musical history and plenty of positive vibes to their inaugural effort.
The record opens on “Witness,” a soulful and introspective piece that brings to mind a mellow Vampire Weekend. Here and through the EP, classic pop melodies and sweet backing vocal harmonies give the sound a timeless feel. “Hold On” follows with an uplifting message and a mellow indie funk that incorporates elements of ska, lo-fi and chamber pop.
“There’s a Light” is a cool and laid-back jazz/pop jam. Casey drops philosophical observations and plenty of feel-good life advice as his Stratocaster lays down a bluesy funk over Ryan’s syncopated groove. The record closes on the title track, a feel-good pop jam with an infectious chorus. Its positive lyrics and chill indie shuffle are the perfect closing comments to a great record.
