Michael Kwok’s Cinematic New ‘Chapter 1: Fate’

michael kwok

Michael Kwok is a classical pianist and composer making his professional solo recording debut in 2022 with a collection of ten original instrumental pieces. Although the Los Angeles, California artist only recently released his debut album, the record is the product of years of training. The 23 year-old musician first started on piano as a child.

Citing new age and classical musicians like Korean pianist Yiruma and Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi as inspiration, Michael Kwok creates richly layered melodic compositions. His music is cinematic but not bombastic. One imagines his pieces set to dramatic, emotional yet understated visuals.

“Chapter 1: Fate” is the debut album from Micahel Kwok, released worldwide via all major streaming services on July 22, 2022. From the opening melodic ballad “Dreams” to the emotional “Waltz of Life,” the pianist paints rich tapestries of sound. Throughout the record Kwok performs alone at his piano which gives the record a warm and intimate feel.

As a composer, Michael Kwok has a knack for structuring emotional narrative melodies. He sets vivid visual scenes on tracks the melancholy “Old Village,” the minor-key waltz “Royal Dance” and the subtle drama of “Flying with the Wind.” It’s a beautiful record from a talented young artist.

Despite his virtuosity, Michael Kwok views himself as a musical hobbyist. However, he is an adventurous one. In the future, the composer plans to branch out into larger arrangements involving multiple instruments in addition to piano.
