Queenie is an emerging independent hip-hop artist who made her professional solo recording debut in 2020 with the single “Laid Out”. That track introduced a skilled emcee who pairs modern hip-hop beats with a lyrical flow that brings to mind the style and sounds of hip-hop’s Golden Age. The London-based artist is making a stir on the international rap scene.
Since her debut the prolific rapper has produced a string of hit singles. She counts her streaming numbers in the millions thanks to tracks like “Letting Up Now.” After taking a brief hiatus from releases last year Queenie came back hard in 2022 with four brand new bangers.
With a sound that is equal parts old-school and new, she delivers smart, rapid-fire rhymes over deep downtempo 808 grooves. Citing inspiration from artists like J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Lauryn Hill and Noname the rapper weaves influences from across the decades to create smart, hard-hitting hip-hop.
“Moves” is the first single and video Queenie dropped in 2022. Minor-key chords meter out an ominous vibe as the beat drops on a slow trap groove. The emcee enters the mix and goes boss mode. “Amen” followed in July. On that track she set her impressive freestyle technique to a Reggaeton-infused beat and pizzicato strings. On “Easy” she delivers a fun braggadocio rap over more Caribbean vibes and ambient synths and vocals. Here and elsewhere her stacatto delivery and clever word-play bring to mind the great Missy Elliott.
“MANMADE ” is the brand new single and video from Queenie, released worldwide via all major streaming services on August 18, 2022. Ambient keys open the track and set a dark mood. Subterranean bass tones rumble the floor as Queenie steps to the mic with a no-nonsense testimony of female empowerment.
