Alan Williams is a veteran singer, songwriter and music scholar and educator. Originally from North Carolina, he relocated to Northeast years ago for college and still lives in Massachusetts today. In the interim he has lived many different musical lives.
After graduating from the prestigious Third Stream Studies (Contemporary Improvisation) program at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music, Alan Williams performed as one-third of the folk-rock band Knots and Crosses. The band had a brush with the majors after enjoying regional success through the eighties and early nineties. However, plans never materialized and they parted ways in 1994.
Since then Dr. Alan Williams has worked both alternately and simultaneously on his scholastic and recording careers. By day he is a professor of music at the University of Massachusetts Lowell with a doctorate in ethnomusicology. In his free time he makes records as both a solo artist and as a member of the alt-folk trio Birdsong At Morning.
“Giving You a Warning” is the current single and video from Alan Williams’ brand new solo album, Currents, released worldwide via all major streaming services on August 19, 2022. Acoustic and electric guitars meter out a simple and catchy chord progression as an organic bass and drum rhythm section holds down mid-tempo guitar-driven alt-pop groove. Alan steps to the mic with a whimsical pop tale marked by some witty turns of phrase and an infectious radio-ready chorus. Impeccably executed harmonies and some tasty guitar leads paint the edges of the mix.
