From top to bottom the band kills it, flashing a healthy dose of jazz chops and plenty of James Brown soul along the way. With equal ease they navigate the r&b-infused 80s-pop of “Great and Holy”, the anthemic soul of “The Well” and “He Never Fails”, and fantastic jams like “Spontaneous Worship (Your Bad Days Are Over)” and the epic closer “Song of Ascension”.
At center stage is Donnis McCoy, guiding her flock and converting non-believers with a voice capable of rising from an angelic whisper to an exalted jubilation. The album flows through a series of song arcs, including live exhortations and extended gospel jams. Backed by an impeccable troupe of back-up singers, Donnis preaches, sings and celebrates. She is the master of ceremonies of a joyful hour-long soul revival.
