Always Becoming is the new collaborative EP from the production team of Melissa Grey & David Morneau, and designer, musician, author and professor, Robert Kirkbride. The New York City based trio came together to capture Kirkbride’s metaphysically inspired compositions in a brand new four song EP. The instrumental collection was inspired by Roberts writings and art on the nature of humanity’s tilted view of seasonal cycles and the nature of being, non-being and change.
The record is the second in a series by Melissa Grey & David Morneau in collaboration with other exceptional musicians and artists. Each installment is inspired by elemental themes: time, space, nature, language and dance. Through their Flower Cat Media production company, the award-winning team of Grey & Morneau have been honored by the Foundation of Contemporary Arts. In 2018 they were named the Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor(s) of the Arts, College of Arts and Media, School of Music, Marshall University, West Virginia.
Always Becoming was released worldwide via all major streaming services on March 7, 2023. The set features a quartet of instrumental compositions for acoustic guitar. Each piece features Robert Kirkbride’s original pieces, augmented by the ethereal production techniques of Grey & Morneau. The trio weave organic and electronic elements into an otherworldly tapestry of sound.
Designed to be played in an endless loop, the record is intended to exist more as a single entity than as a collection of individual tunes. Hypnotic minimalist percussion spins in syncopated cycles around Kirkbride’s melodic fingerpicking. Electric guitar harmonics, trombone and theremin paint the periphery as we contemplate the impermanence of and constantly flowing nature of existence. It is a beautiful and transcendent piece of music.
