When Mountains Speak is the brainchild of veteran composer and multi-instrumentalist producer Steven Clarkson. He debuted the project in 2020 with the album Out of the Forest. That record introduced a genre-bending improvisation instrumental sound inspired by the work of psychedelic rock and freeform jazz legends like Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia and jazz icon John Coltrane.
Steven Clarkson first picked up the saxophone in the fifth grade. Thus began a five decade musical journey that has produced an astounding volume of work. He has collaborated on countless projects over the years. Since launching When Mountain Speaks he has released a remarkable sixteen albums in just three years. In 2022 bassist Jim Gary joined the ensemble.
Old Fades to New is the brand new album from When Mountains Speak, released worldwide via all major streaming services on May 1, 2023. The 9-song collection continues the duo’s explorations into improvisational psychedelia. “Sliding” is the current single and video from the album. A trio of tabla, sitar and bass introduce the tune in a chilled out meditative vibe. A haunting ethereal electric guitar spins hypnotic Eastern melodies and washed-out acid-rock riffs on the periphery as Jim holds down the low end with some jazzy improvisation.
