The Handsome Bandit is an emerging independent recording duo with a unique sound built on elements of pop, rock and jazz. Eric Niequist (bass & vocals) and Allison Hogan (piano & vocals) made their professional recording debut in 2010 with the Sneaky EP. That record introduced an eclectic group with virtuosic chops, keen pop sensibilities, and an alternative rock edge.
Since their debut, The Handsome Bandit have released two EPs and their 2019 single “Believe You Me”. Natives of the Chicago suburbs, the pair have performed all over the Windy City. Some notable performances include appearances at legendary hotspots like Double Door Chicago, Cubby Bear Chicago, Reggies Chicago, Penny Road Pub, Clearwater Theater, Lily’s Chicago, and Two Brothers RoundHouse Aurora.
Spotlight – EP is the latest release from The Handsome Bandit, available worldwide via all major streaming services. The aptly titled four-song collection showcases what this band does best, offering catchy pop nuggets unencumbered by overproduction. The record’s crisp and clean sound puts a spotlight on their powerful lead vocals, warm harmonies, edgy bass riffs, and intricate piano melodies.
The EP opens with the classic radio-ready pop sound of “Fantasy”. Bouncing piano chords ride an uptempo backbeat groove. Eric offers an introspective observation about life and love, with a great hook. The song “Pages” continues that vibe, but this time Allison joins him on the mic. The pair adds some very smooth multi-part harmonies to their layered indie-pop sound.
“The Lost” takes a turn into darker territory with some prog-rock-infused alternative. The Handsome Bandit injects their cinematic Ben Folds-style alt-pop track with a healthy dose of Rush-inspired breaks. They close the set with an emotional dark-pop duet “Hourglass”, a cinematic and melancholy ballad, colored with strings and anthemic vocals.
