AR Style is a veteran independent hip-hop artist making his solo professional recording debut in 2023. Although this is his first official release, the rapper’s creative career began with formal music training in grade school. By the age of 10 he was writing his own original songs and poems.
A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, AR Style’s influences include groundbreaking emcees like Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, and Andre 3000. He also cites his love of jazz as a significant inspiration for his sound. The poetic rapper views his music through a philosophical lens.
Home from Asia is the debut EP from AR Style, released worldwide via all major streaming services on April 28, 2023. The record opens on the dulcet strings and piano of “Dark Blue Sky”. Soon the beat drops on the rumbling bass tones and funky 808 percussion of a glitch/trap beat. On the mic the singer delivers some colorful psychedelic love poetry.
“Songtan” continues the experimental beats, pairing a sample of Kanye West’s “Violent Crimes” with a dose of dubstep bass. AR Style drops some impressive rhymes and a rapid-fire flow on that song and the subsequent Paky-sampled “Money Laundry”. As a writer, AR-Style frequently shifts perspective back and forth between thoughtful object observer and active participant.
“Big Glow” highlights the rapper’s eclectic style. The track pairs Kate Bush’s “Running up that Hill ” with a beat built on elements of hyperpop, trap, and UK grime as AR Style and featured rapper Yvng Nelly trade hard rap bars and infectious pop hooks. “Stick” closes out the record with a smart and dark allegorical drill trap.
