Broken Hex is an emerging independent electronic recording artist making his solo professional recording debut in 2023. Although this recording project is new, the otherwise anonymous musician is a veteran songwriter and producer who has collaborated with other independent artists around the world. After 15 years of working behind the scenes, he is stepping into the spotlight.
A native of Colorado Springs, Broken Hex now calls Boston, Massachusetts home. A genre-fluid composer, his sound is not easily pigeonholed into a singular style. Mixing elements of hip-hop, pop, and downtempo electronic music, he paints a surreal soundscape.
Sound of Magic is the debut album from Broken Hex, released worldwide via all major streaming services on February 21, 2023. The nine-song collection showcases the artist’s versatility as both a producer and performer. From the cinematic piano and angelic vocals of “Sweet Misery” to the synthy lo-fi of “Ignite the Flame”, the experimental producer takes us on a dark and dreamy ride.
Although the album is mostly instrumental, Broken Hex uses both live and sampled vocals to color his sound on tracks like the groovy “Kanpai”. The adventurous musician blends trip-hop vibes with jazz-hop grooves on tunes like “Northern Skies”, delves into some ambient synthwave on “Abundance” and then a bit of 8-bit electro-pop on “Forever”.
On tunes like “Winter Days’ ‘ and “Finesse”, the eclectic producer mixes a healthy dose of live organic instrumentation into his experimental electronic stew. A common intangible creative thread runs through all of Broken Hex’s stylistic explorations, tying the record together into a cohesive whole.
