The Hidden Gems is a brand new alt-pop duo making their recording debut in 2023. The project is the brainchild of vocalist Crystal St. John and multi-instrumentalist producer Robert Murphy. The songwriting duo are launching their new musical collaboration with a heartfelt ode to parenthood.
Although this is the first release from The Hidden Gems, Murphy and St. John are both veterans of the Los Angeles scene. Robert has released previous work under the band name Sybil, and Crystal has a string of solo releases in her catalog. For their debut, the pair recruited some of their a-list musician friends like drummer Dan Konopka (OK Go), bassist Sean Hurley (John Mayer, Lana Del Rey, Stevie Nicks), renowned pianist Michael Arrom, guitarist Leo Abrahams (Regina Spektor), Matt DeMerritt on horns, and Beau Golden on keys.
“My Favorite Stranger” is the debut single and video from The Hidden Gems, released worldwide via all major streaming services on February 7, 2023. An upbeat guitar-driven mid-tempo indie-pop beat opens the tune on a laid-back feel-good mood. Crystal St. John steps to the mic, and with an easy Tanya Donnelly-style alt-pop vibe, she sings a touching love song to parenthood. The band matches that aesthetic with an expertly crafted 90s college pop/rock groove.
