Jeán et Joie’s Melancholic Yet Hopeful Indie-Folk Vibe

Jeán et Joie

Jeán et Joie is a new indie-folk ensemble led by singer/songwriter Grey Jeán. They are making their professional recording debut in 2023. However, the multifaceted artist’s musical journey began years earlier, in Mountain Home, Arkansas where they sang in church choirs and performed at open mics with their three talented sisters.

Grey Jeán would later move to California, where they would perform in a number of bands before forming Jeán et Joie with their fiancé Gabrielle Néla. The two would eventually recruit the drum and guitar duo Ikaika and Dash from the LA band, Flamango Bay. Now based in North Carolina, the quartet is preparing the release of their debut EP Bramble.

“Glory Be” is one of two advance singles from Bramble, released worldwide via all major streaming services on June 5, 2023. A solo electric guitar opens the track with a minor-key chord progression, set to a downtempo 6/8 waltz. Grey Jeán steps to the mic and offers a beautiful and melancholy stream-of-consciousness poem, recalling the late-great Leonard Cohen with hazy biblical imagery and a postmodern meditation on faith, love, confusion and loss. An organic ensemble of piano, acoustic guitar, bass, and drums eases its way into the mix, laying down a chilled and folky Americana vibe.
