Janney Drops 90s Vibes On New ‘State Of War’

Janney

Janney is the professional name of independent recording and visual artist William Janney.  He dropped his self-titled debut album in 2021. That record introduced a multitalented and eclectic singer-songwriter with a soulful tenor and a taste for retro pop grooves.

Since his debut, Janney has connected with fans around the world with popular tracks like “Hollow”, “LEave You Now”, and “Come to Me” which has over one million streams on Spotify.  A versatile and eclectic creator, he cites a wide range of pop and rock legends as inspiration for his sound, from 70’s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd to modern day pop queens like Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift. His latest project is a collaboration with Dallas, Texas-based producer Aaron Kelley based out of Dallas TX.

“State of War” is the new EP from Janney, available worldwide via all major streaming services. The six-song set is a subtle departure from the 80’s inspired synth-pop of his debut. The record mixes elements of R&B, dance, and rock into the mix for a decidedly 90’s feel.

"I wanted to chase a more laid back sonic space than my first project... I wanted to create something that felt a little more laid back and nuanced. I was chasing a 90's cool vibe for a lot of the tracks"

From the chilled pop and funk moods of “Elevated” to the laid-back pop/trip-hop groove of the title track, State of War” pairs classic beats with modern vibes and timeless pop hooks. On “Handle It”, Janney and Kelley set a smooth R&B slow jam to a trap beat. They add a bit of dark pop to that mix on the wistful breakup song “All Along”.

“Home” is a real highpoint. Janney delivers a heartbreaker dream-pop love song over a chilled disco-infused beat. The record keeps it on the dance floor for the infectious dance/pop jam “Drive Me Crazy”. The track opens with a cool electro-pop riff before dropping, landing on an infectious mid-tempo groove.
