Neil Levin is an emerging independent recording artist and producer who made his solo professional recording debut in 2020 with the album Blue Roses on My Grave. That record introduced a talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and surfer from Orange County, California. It also launched Levin’s Cosmic Blues series of blues-based tunes.
In addition to his solo work, Neil Levin is the frontman and founder of the popular SoCal psychedelic jam-band counterconformity. He formed the group in 2018 while taking classes and eventually graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He also performs as one-half of the western duo Father Son Levin, with his father Alan. Since his debut as a solo artist, the prolific producer has released a remarkable volume of work, including three albums, two EPs, and nearly two dozen singles.
Cosmic Blues is the brand new album from Neil Levin, released worldwide via all major streaming services on December 15, 2023. The eight-song set is the third installment and titular release of the singer’s self-styled new blues-based genre. The song is a live, organic, and soulful mix of blues, indie, and lo-fi.
From the broken-man Delta blues of “Not Worthwhile” to the acoustic heartbreak torch song “Sixstring”, Neil Levin matches a timeless groove with an indie aesthetic. Throughout the album he pairs classic Southern blues vibes and guitar stylings with modern song structures and lyrical themes. Tracks like the “Gone Away” and “Roses on the Grave” find unlikely common ground between the blues of Muddy Waters and the post-mortem lyrical themes of modern artists like Lana Del Rey.
Levin sticks close to tradition on “Cosmic Blues Interlude”, a fun instrumental groove with a great honky-tonk feel. Similarly “God of Blues” is a raw, no-frills downtempo 12-bar blues trio jam. “Brave New World” follows with a hypnotic bit of organic psychedelia and some sharp social commentary.
