We first heard from Tony Venuto in February of 2023, upon the release of his debut solo album 20 Years. That record introduced The Static Dive readers to a veteran singer, songwriter, and guitarist from San Francisco. His sound is a fluid mix of modern and retro indie-pop and alternative rock.
In just a year since his debut, Tony Venuto has already released two full-length albums. He has connected with fans worldwide, clocking over 150K streams on Spotify alone. Taking inspiration from a broad range of artists across the musical spectrum, he is an eclectic and creative songwriter who keeps one foot in the past and the other forever moving forward.
City and Sand is the brand new album from Tony Venuto, released worldwide via all major streaming services on January 8, 2024. The ten-song set further defines Venuto’s unique blend of post-punk, indie, and new wave. From the funky Talking Heads vibes of tracks like “Go to the Light” and “Flamethrower”, to the dream-pop grooves of “Ocean”, he blends elements of pop and rock from the past to the present.
Lyrically, Tony Venuto’s songs are conversational, and personal. Whether commenting on the dismal landscape of corporate America (“Cubicle Nightmare”), pondering the nature of reality (“Imaginary”), or singing a sugary-sweet love song (“My Love For You”), he does so in a matter-of-fact, easily accessible and familiar tone. Throughout the record, Venuto colors his indie compositions with some slick guitar playing, dropping a healthy dose of psychedelia on tracks like “You Can Come Home” and very cool, lo-fi and bluesy “Let it Go”.
