shy blossom Debut New South FL Alt-Rock

shy blossom

shy blossom is an emerging alternative rock band who made their recording debut in 2023 with the single “All I Wanted”. That song introduced 18-year-old frontwoman Adriana McDonald. Originally from Portage County Ohio, the young singer-songwriter now calls Punta Gorda, Florida home.

Adriana McDonald first picked up the guitar in 2020. Within a year she was performing live and competing in songwriting competitions. She now performs both solo and with shy blossom across Southwest Florida.

Bloom is the debut album from shy blossom, released worldwide via all major streaming services on February 20. The album was produced by Howard Wulkan at Farmadelica Sound and features former Pearl Jam Drummer David Abbruzzese on 5 songs. From 90s alt-pop inspired heartbreakers like “All I Wanted” and “The Fool” to the dark grunge rock of “Underneath”, the 11-song set showcases the diversity of this talented new band.

“Crazy For You” opens on a chilled funk groove as Adriana adds a nice dose of rock & roll soul. shy blossom follows with a trio of mid-tempo acoustic/electric rockers. “Hold Me” adds a touch of the Caribbean to that mood. A nice 6/8 swing gives the melancholy “Can’t Get Used To This” a cool noir vibe in verse before the chorus builds to an alt-rock anthem.

“Somebody New” pairs an uptempo pop beat and infectious hook with big rock energy.  Both musically and lyrically, “Honey, Come Over” and “I Don’t Want It” feature some of the most nuanced musical and emotional moments on the record. The latter recalling the classic rock harmonies of Heart. The record closes with the Seattle-inspired rumble of “Underneath”

8 Questions with Adriana McDonald of shy blossom

shy blossom Debut New South FL Alt-Rock 1

Where are you from?

I’m from N.E. Ohio, near Warren close to Dave Grohl Alley. I currently live in Punta Gorda Florida with my parents.

How long have you been making music?

I’ve been around music my entire life. I grew up watching my dad play in bands for years, as well as watching my grandfather play the guitar on occasion. I have always sang and wrote lyrics, but it wasn’t until mid-2020 that I learned to play the guitar and really started honing my songwriting skills. My parents encouraged me to leave my bedroom and get out in front of people around 2021, and now I have an extensive list of venues I play solo, as well as with my band shy blossom.

Who are the musicians involved in your project

Adriana McDonald – Lead vocals, guitar

Abel Ramirez – Lead Guitar, back vocals

Julie Copithorn – Drums

Preston Lich – bass

David Abbruzzese, formerly of Pearl Jam, played drum tracks on 5 songs on my debut album.

Who are your biggest musical influences

Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple, Mitski, Melanie Martinez, and pretty much anything that I find interesting and that list is very long!

What is your greatest non-musical influence?

My parents, movies, and world events. Pretty much anything that elicits an emotion.

What inspired you to create this project?

I think growing up around music ignited the spark of inspiration, but it was my parents that really encouraged me to get out there. I had around 20 songs written around the time my parents pushed me to record my first album with my band shy blossom.

What are your plans for the future (musically)?

My plans are to get enough exposure to be seen internationally. For the moment we are touring South Florida with plans to keep pushing north. Pushing Spotify and YouTube marketing, social media marketing, and hopefully get on a tour with a more established band so people can see my art.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Music is my life. I just graduated high school and college with a 2-year art degree. I just turned 18 in March and have decided to forego more college for the time being and pursue my dream. I have been very fortunate so far with all the help I have received from family and friends and I hope one day I can repay them all in some fashion.
