We first heard from OrionLion in January upon the release of his single “詩經-靜女 The Reticent Girl From the Ancient Classic of Poetry”. That track introduced The Static Dive readers to an emerging independent recording artist, originally from China’s Guangdong province and now living in Hong Kong. He is a genre-bending composer with an insatiable appetite for classic vinyl and cassette recordings.
Since his 2023 debut, OrionLion has released a string of popular singles and EPs. Last June he set up a new recording studio and was soon inspired by the neighborhood’s 80s Taiwanese night market and bar-style Nagashi dance music. His latest single is written in that style.
“What Else Do You Want From Me” is a new single from OrionLion, released worldwide via all major streaming services on April 22, 2024. The track opens on a classic 80’s drum machine and retro synth groove. A backbeat guitar and electronic koto melodies paint the edges of the mix. Singing in Chinese, the singer offers an anthem of the hardships and financial struggles faced by young people entering the workforce.
