Konversations Kill is a brand new band formed by two veteran Canadian musicians. Scott Burton and Stephen Selski are old friends who have played together in a series of different projects over the years. The pair rejoined recently to form an acoustic duo and tapped into a whole new vibe in the process.
Once Burton and Selski sat down together with their flat tops the songs started flowing. After banking over fifty new tracks, they share the tunes with friends and family. The overwhelmingly positive feedback they received inspired them to head to the studio with hitmaking producer Jeff Dawson, (Daniel Powter). An album was born.
Konversations Kill is the band’s eponymous debut album, released worldwide via all major streaming services on July 31, 2024. The nine-track set showcases the songwriting chops of two seasoned rockers who know their way around a pop hook. Their semi-acoustic and quirky-funk sound is reminiscent of alternative pioneers like Violent Femmes and Talking Heads.
From the upbeat alt-pop grooves and lush vocal harmonies of “I’m Not Crazy” to the retro analog synths and clever wordplay of “Suicide High”, Konversations Kill seamlessly blend the classic alternative sound of the 80s and 90s with a modern indie aesthetic. Scott and Stephen are skilled songwriters with keen pop sensibilities. They flex those muscles on radio-ready bops like “I’m Not Like You” and uptempo acoustic rockers like “Come into the Fire ” and “No No No”.
Although the record is primarily acoustic, producer Jeff Dawson weaves plenty of synths, strings, and syncopated percussive elements into the mix on tracks like the introspective ballad “What’s it all About”. “Don’t Push the Button” pairs ominous social commentary with a great rolling bass groove. However, even when they are fighting the power on tracks like “Mary Mary”, Konversations Kill never lose sight of the all-important hook.
