Dian Sheng is an emerging independent recording artist who made his solo debut in 2023. An international talent, he previously trained with virtuosos. Since then, the genre-defying musician has connected with fans around the world.
Originally from Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, Dian Sheng showed an early interest in and aptitude for music. In 2015 a music study opportunity brought him to Berlin. Three years later he moved to the UK, where the recent University College London graduate currently resides.
Sid is Dian Sheng’s nickname. It is also the title of his debut album, which is available worldwide via all major streaming services. The eight-song set introduces a multi-talented recording artist, composer, and producer.
The album opens on the rousing and inspirational guitar-fueled power-pop anthem “Right Now”. The song immediately showcases Dian Sheng’s keen pop sensibilities. “I Come From Far” is a melancholy homesick indie-pop bop with more catchy radio-ready melodies.
The singer’s easy delivery on the acoustic “Undecided Love” recalls a mellow Ray Davies (The Kinks). However, the track soon slides into a cool jazz-pop vibe. Dian Sheng continues that cool jazz motif with the upbeat, verbose, and percussive Joe Jackson-style “It Will Be Alright”. “Seventeen” takes a turn to the 80’s. Retro synths, smoking guitars, and those wonderfully infectious Sid hooks ride a made-for-MTV pop-rock groove.
Dian looks inward on “This Life”, an uplifting tale of past, present, future, and the beauty of existing. “The Way Before” is a wistful look back with a beautiful organic arrangement peppered with a few subtle production nods to the Fab Four. The record closes with the beautiful torch-song piano ballad “Shining As Your Name”.
