Dial to Modern is an emerging acoustic indie duo from San Francisco, California. Dave Shear (lead vocals and guitar) and Curt Yagi (bass, keys, and vocals) are two veteran NorCal musicians with a knack for simple yet musically sophisticated arrangements and infectious pop hooks. They debuted their new project in October.
Prior to the launch of Dial to Modern, Shear and Yagi performed together in the popular SF band Useless Desires. The new project’s sound is a mix of acoustic instrumentation and subtle electronic syncopation. As inspiration, they cite similarly savvy modern and classic rock songsmiths like Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, and The Police.
Places is the debut EP from Dial to Modern, released worldwide via all major streaming services on October 30, 2024. The five-song set is a showcase for their unique blend of chilled grooves, poetic lyricism, and virtuosic musicianship. They match that mellow organic vibe with smooth radio-ready tenors and ethereal backing vocals.
From the subtle Latin vibes and dreamy harmonies of “Whole” to the blues licks and easy groove of the title track, Dial to Modern transports us to some beautiful places. “SF was” is a melancholy piano and guitar duet featuring a lush vocal arrangement. The band marries that mood with an infectious sing-song indie folk melody on “Full Bloom”, and then add layers of percussion and sultry wordplay with the hypnotic “Sunday Ride”.
