I featured producer Mathew Shell’s work here before. A few weeks ago I reviewed the expertly crafted Smooth Jazz piece “Pilot,” by the aptly named Groove Project. Well, Matt asked me to check out another of his projects; “Todos Son Bienvenidos.” The song is another collaboration between Matt and others from the seemingly endless list of high-caliber Rock and Jazz musicians in his Rolodex.
My Spanish is a little rusty. However, I know the title translates to “All Are Welcome Here.” The song’s message of inclusivity is delivered by talented young singer, Judy Hunter. She has a really relaxed and smooth vocal style. I particularly liked the harmonies in the chorus and elsewhere throughout the track. They are beautiful.
Musically the song builds progressively from a basic guitar and drum stomp into a big and emotional jam. The drums, for instance, start as a simple one-and-two Pop/Rock beat. However, they ultimately evolve into fusion-inspired rhythms accented by Neil Peart style tom-roll drum fills.
The instrumental version of the song features Douglas Lira on sax. It has been featured on The Tony Kornheiser Show, Hybrid Jazz Radio with Trish Hennessey, Evening Jazz with Keanna Faircloth on WPFW 89.3 FM, KKFI 90.1 FM, and KOJH 104.7 FM, among others.
