Charu Suri’s Uplifting “Keep Dreaming”

Charu Suri

We first heard from Charu Suri earlier this year upon the release of her holiday themed single and video, “A Little Joy.” That track introduced us to a groundbreaking Jazz pianist and composer with one eye on tradition and the other on her own fusion of classic Indian music and modern Western Jazz. Born in India and now based in New York City, Suri connects the cultures of her two homes with her music.

Since her 2018 debut the prolific artist has released two full length albums, an EP and two standalone singles. From the neo-traditionalism of “The New American Songbook” to the wildly creative “Book of Ragas,” the multifaceted artist has made a name for herself in the Jazz world as both a talented player and a visionary composer. “Keep Dreaming” is the latest single from Charu Suri, released worldwide to all major streaming platforms on April 30, 2021.

For this new piece, Suri is revisiting the classic Songbook style. On the track, Charu (piano) is joined by Danielle Erin Rhodes on vocals, Jay O’Brien on the drums and Justin Lee on the double bass. The piano/bass/drum trio is recorded live in the studio with a warm natural room sound. It is a beautiful, organic and three dimensional recording. Rhodes delivers the song’s uplifting message of persistent positivity with a smooth tone and a touch of Broadway. The band is excellent and Charu’s laid back improvisational style brings to mind the greats of mid-twentieth century Jazz.
