The Killing Tapes – Dark Themes & First Love

The Killing Tapes

We first heard from The Killing Tapes in April upon the release of their debut single “Real Thing.” With that song we were introduced to the Swedish songwriting duo of Marcus Crede and Peter Svensson. The two joined forces in 2020 to bring life to Marcus’ artistic vision for the new songs he had written. The result is the forthcoming full length album “Black.”

“Black” is a concept album with a dark theme and an air of mystery. The songs on the record tell the story of a difficult time in Marcus’ life, however the narrative is filtered through the lens of a series of serial killer murders in the early 1990’s. It is dark stuff set to sounds inspired by the classic Alternative Rock of the 1980’s and 90’s. The band keeps the details of the story close to the vest. We do not know where the personal memories end and the serial killer begins.

“First Love ” is the brand new single and video from The Killing Tapes, released worldwide to all major streaming services on June 1, 2021. With it’s mix of analog and digital sounds and complex emotional layers the track has a vibe that lands somewhere stylistically between the 70’s Art-Rock of early Genesis and the darker work of 80’s Alt Pop/Rock bands like the Police or INXS. After a dissonant guitar intro the song rolls on a mix of low synth bass and live drums. Marcus delivers the song’s haunting melody with a powerful vocal. Knowing the forthcoming album’s dark premise lends an ominous undertone to the song’s emotional goodbyes and wistful memories.
